What Comprises Daily Maintenance Checks Required for a Coolroom?
18 March 2019Maintenance check logbooks can be found outside most coolrooms. Just look around for it before going inside. It sits in a slot or hangs on a string. If nothing else, the inclusion of this checklist recording medium shows just how important a daily maintenance schedule is as a health and hygiene assurance service. Permit us to flick through the logbook’s pages now, where the inspection schedule exacts its demands.
Coolroom Maintenance: Daily Checks
The inspection has a secondary purpose, to organise stored products so that a business concern stays profitable. Everything is in reach, and the staff members entering the coolroom easily load their food trolleys with whatever item they need. Of more importance, there’s the cleanliness and hygiene question to take care of here. Maintained to the highest standard, the checklist kicks off with a thermostat check. A look at the condition of the refrigeration equipment is next. Are the fans and coils clean? Is there any icy build-up covering those components? What about strange fluid leaks? Don’t touch the liquid, just take note of its presence. This could be an oil or refrigerant leak. Not only should this kind of fault be recorded in the coolroom logbook, but it also needs to be immediately brought to the attention of whoever’s in charge so that a repair tech can be called out to fix the issue.
Maximizing Checklist Coverage
System checks are important, but then there are the hygiene audits to carry out. Strange stains and dirty pools need to be mopped away by a young staff member before the business can use the room. Dirt and dust cleaning routines are also on the checklist. A bucket of warm, soapy water will wash away the grime. Stepping back after the cleaning and organising is done for the day, is there anything else to do? Well, some of the big boxes and containers are laying haphazardly on a shelf. It’s the wrong shelf, too. So, what’s the problem? Airflow issues, that’s the problem. The shelves and containers must be arranged and managed so that the coolroom’s space is maximised. With this done, cool air moves in and out, between every box and cabinet rack.
After the daily checks, there are weekly and monthly inspections to address. They take the staff’s attention towards the fins of a condenser coil, towards door mechanisms or chamber seals. For day-to-day business runnings, however, the maintenance inspection schedule focuses on system operability, coolroom hygiene and shelf space optimisation. Quite frankly, without this cold storage checklist in place, business owners will find it very hard to safeguard their refrigerated merchandise.
